What Makes California the Most Desirable Place to Live?

California | Brian Merrick

As a child growing up in the United States, you may have learned the elementary school song “Fifty Nifty”, about the 50 American states originating from the 13 colonies first established in the eighteenth century. You may know the names (and capitals) of all 50 states, from Alabama to Wyoming, but one question remains the most hotly contested since the founding of the nation: which state is really the best state to live in? Certainly residents know that California is the most desirable place to live in the US – and maybe the world. Whether you are a young working person, a newlywed or a parent looking to raise your family, this state offers a broad range of opportunities, both personal and professional.

There are so many amazing advantages to moving to California to start, restart, or bolster your life. This article lists just a few of the many things that make California the most desirable state to live in.

Attractions

California is home to many attractions – its residents certainly never know a dull or boring moment. There are museums, state parks and gardens, zoos and aquariums, and world-renowned restaurants for residents (and visitors) to enjoy. Balance Between Urban and Nature

Since California stretches for 840 miles of America’s Pacific coast, there is an excellent balance between the urban areas and the opportunity to engage in nature.

You can enjoy the urban centers, with their culture, nightlife, and career opportunities, or you can participate in hiking, surfing, sailing, or skiing – living and loving the beautiful outdoor aspects of the country’s greatest state!

Three of the country’s most famous national parks are all housed within California’s borders:

  • Redwood National Park
  • Yosemite National Park
  • Death Valley National Park

California’s beaches also boast some of the best surfing conditions in the continental United States. In the mountainous parts of the state, there are also skiing resorts:

Not to mention, California is conveniently located within easy travel distance of some of the country’s other best ski destinations.

Climate

One of the main reasons people move to California from other states is for the climate. California is home to whatever climate you prefer. If you’re looking to move to California, considering the type of weather you prefer can help you decide where to live.

Warm weatherAlong the coast in general, the Pacific Ocean promotes mild winters and hot, dry summers, much like a Mediterranean climate.

Desert weather – Some areas experience desert-like conditions, such as Palm Springs.

Cooler weather – The northern part of the state borrows its climate from Oregon and Washington, and is wetter and, in the winter, colder. The mountains, too, are recipients of a fair amount of snow.

So if you like a beachy climate, then California is definitely for you. If you prefer snow and colder weather, fear not, this state is still for you. If you’ve always wished to experience desert living – then California is also for you. When it comes to weather, this state has it all.

Culture

California is also home a rich, diverse, accepting cultural and emotional climate. Because it shares a border with Mexico, California has the benefit of being home to many immigrants who have infused their culture into California. This means that California offers the opportunity for multilingual relationships and cuisine shaped by other cultures.

Similarly, because of its position along the Pacific, it is home to many people of Hawaiian and Japanese descent, who offer further depth and breadth to the linguistics, culture, and cuisine of the state.

California is furthermore renowned for their accepting and liberal viewpoints, being one of the first states to recognize and legitimize same-sex marriage. No matter what your lifestyle or preferences, you can be sure to find a warm welcome in your new home state.

Economic Opportunities

In keeping with the rest of the US, California currently has unemployment rates holding steady under 5%. There are so many opportunities in diverse industries in California.

Hollywood, for starters, is the largest and oldest film industry in the world. Aspiring actors and actresses, screenwriters, and cinematographers come from all around the country – and the world – to take part in the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. Stars flame bright, for sure, but because of the sheer size of the industry, it also offers opportunity for those that wish to make a name for themselves behind the cameras instead of in front of them.

Silicon Valley, the nickname for the southern part of the San Francisco bay area, is another area rife with opportunity and career advancement. Considered the technology capital, Silicon Valley offers opportunities in communication, radio, military tech, and computer hardware and software, including Google headquarters, the Googleplex.

Of course, there are also opportunities for chefs and restaurateurs who wish to make their mark in California, an area that has long been highly regarded for its innovation and excellence in restaurants and cuisines. Or, for those who wish to work in hospitality, California offers world-class resorts and hotels.
